Provide group times such as eating times, project times, and meeting times. It is in these groups that children will become aware of each other and gain a sense of the class as a whole. Hallways and other circulation areas that are wider than typical corridors offer found space for play or parent-staff conversations or staff breaks. Chair rails or other types of molding can be used to define sleeping areas for infants and toddlers. Provide the knowledge and skills to help families recognize that the most important part of their children’s environment is the relationships they grow together.

Find ways to be reflective and respectful of the cultures your families come from. Rather than purchasing toys that represent world cultures, use textiles and fabrics common to the cultures of the families your program serves. Ask families to provide you with the empty food containers (cereal boxes, etc.) they use; cover these with contact paper and place them in the “housekeeping area” so that the children’s playthings are the items they see at home. Recognize that children and youth spend a lot of time in your program, and everybody needs a break sometimes. Provide a variety of ways that children can take a little time for themselves; a quiet book area, a computer center, or the art area can all provide a brief break from the busy, social day. This can be especially important to some children with special needs. Your effort to create a relaxing, homelike environment is critical.

Even in apartments where the floor plan is the same for every unit, the way people decorate and the furniture they choose provide a sense of individuality. People tend to create spaces that are reflective of their personalities and family culture. Think for a moment about your own home and what makes it special. Are there elements of your home that are unmistakably you and/or your family?

When designing your space, make sure that you can supervise all areas, including private spaces. Make sure that you have secure storage for all items that are unsafe for children (e.g., cleaning materials). A well-designed indoor environment will keep children and youth engaged in appropriate play and help prevent undesirable, unsafe behaviors (e.g., jumping, running in inappropriate spaces).

Using pictures of the experiences in which the children engage with one another in the learning environment communicates that this space belongs to the children. It also provides them with concrete documentation to reflect back on the experience. As with adults, children need time and space during the day to relax on their own. Especially after being in formal school, school-age children may crave some down time.

It is important to provide a calming space to take a break from the group. This space can be limited to one or two children and created so that there is still visibility to ensure safety. Learning activities that foster cognitive development and stimulate curiosity include reading, telling stories and naming, counting and drawing. Children’s socio-emotional development is facilitated by the involvement of parents and other caregivers in activities such as playing and singing. Play has been emphasized as a particularly important aspect of children’s lives since it helps stimulate children’s minds and bodies.

You can also include a space for special announcements such as birthdays or cultural celebrations. Adding an authentic item as provocation can support what children already know about their world, or invite them to touch, smell, see or hear something new. This can include items from nature, such as leaves or nuts, or a vase of fresh flowers. Consider asking families to provide items from home, especially ones with cultural relevance like a piece of fabric or a paper lantern. Also, adding things like an old record player or piece of stained glass can elicit new discoveries.
